How much a new A-Class costs, and where it sits in its segment

The A-Class price starts at €39,750 in France in 2026, the list price of the A 180 136 hp in Star Edition trim. The top of the range reaches €86,100 with Mercedes-AMG versions.

That entry point places the compact Mercedes above its two best-selling rivals. The gap shows mainly at the bottom of the range.

The table flips at the top of the price list. The A3 peaks at €55,900 and the Golf at €58,900, two levels the A-Class only passes with its AMG derivatives. Across the core range, the versions actually ordered, all three models land in the same €40,000 to €48,000 bracket.

For a first move into a premium compact, the €5,150 gap with the A3 owes less to equipment than to what the badge is worth at resale time. That is the one line of the calculation where the A-Class takes the lead.

Price moves mostly with the engine

Five engines make up the 2026 line-up, all supplied with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard.

The step from the A 180 to the A 200 costs just €2,250 at identical trim, for 27 extra horsepower. Moving to the plug-in hybrid costs far more: €7,300 above an A 200, a bill only urban drivers with a home charging point and company fleets manage to absorb.

Trim weighs almost as much as the engine. On an A 180, the price list runs from €39,750 in Star Edition to €45,650 in AMG Exclusive Design, €5,900 for the same 136 hp unit. The AMG Line step, billed at €2,300, brings cosmetic parts only.

New, used or leased: three budgets for the same car

One A-Class means three very different budgets depending on the route chosen.

Recent used cars hold the best compromise. A 2022 example with 42,800 km was selling for €25,900 in July 2026, €15,400 below the list price of the same version new. The checks to run before signing are covered in our guide to buying a used car.

Below €15,000, the 2012-2018 generation comes within reach, but the dual clutch on the first-generation 7G-DCT gearbox costs €1,500 to €2,500 through the network. A complete service history matters more than a low odometer reading.

On a lease, the monthly payment depends on three levers: the deposit, the annual mileage and the buy-back value. A €5,000 deposit cuts around €130 per month over 36 months, and moving from 10,000 to 20,000 km a year adds €40 to €60. What an A-Class costs after the purchase

The list price says nothing about the real budget. Three items pile on from the first year.

The CO2 penalty. All five combustion engines are rated between 128 and 134 g/km of CO2, which exposes them to the French registration penalty. Only the A 250 e plug-in hybrid, at 53 g/km, escapes it. On a combustion A-Class, this line noticeably changes the price of driving off the forecourt.

The registration certificate. Its cost depends on the fiscal power of the car and the region of registration, with regional taxes that vary twofold from one region to another. Running the numbers through a vehicle registration cost simulator avoids a surprise on the final invoice.

The loss of value. This is the heaviest and least visible item. A 2022 A 180 d with 42,800 km was worth €25,900 in July 2026, while the same version new is billed at €41,300. The order of magnitude is around 35% over four years, bearing in mind that the 2022 list price was lower than today’s.

That depreciation explains why trim levels matter at resale. An AMG Line finds a buyer faster than an entry-level trim, without recovering the €2,300 paid up front. AMG Exclusive Design, €5,650 above Progressive Line, remains the hardest line to justify financially.

Where the price is actually negotiated

Two channels offer the same A-Class on different terms.

At an authorised dealership, discounts commonly range from 4 to 8% on an in-stock car, and exceed 10% on an end-of-model-year or showroom vehicle. A trade-in is valued face to face and stacks with the discount.

Online intermediaries advertise up to 25% on some versions, with an entry price recorded at €38,119 in July 2026. The price is low but fixed, with no valued trade-in and no local workshop for servicing.

Stock depth is what moves the final figure: a distributor with several A-Class cars available immediately can play its own sites against each other, whereas an isolated dealership places a factory order and loses all leeway. One last figure before signing: on an A 200 AMG Line invoiced at €44,300, six points of discount represent €2,658, roughly the cost of stepping up from Progressive Line to AMG Line.
