MT-07 and MT-09 reliability
MT-07: the nearly indestructible CP2 twin
The CP2 689 cc is known for its exceptional robustness: over 100 000 km without major intervention isn’t rare on 2014-2018 models still on the road.
MT-09: a slightly more sensitive but reliable triple
The CP3 890 cc 2024 version is newer and integrates lessons from recent years. 2014-2020 MT-09s had some rough engine mapping issues fixed by 2021 and 2024 versions.

Frequently asked questions
MT-07 or MT-09 restricted A2, which one to choose?
The MT-07 A2 stays more relevant. The 689 cc twin keeps 85% of its character at 35 kW thanks to engine smoothness. The MT-09 A2 loses 60% of its power and all the triple’s personality.
What sensation difference between 2 and 3 cylinders?
The CP2 twin offers a smooth, linear, predictable character with a raw offbeat sound. The CP3 triple has sharper rev climb, more aggressive tone with unique acceleration sound.
How much insurance on these two bikes?
For a 30-year-old rider with 3 years A licence, third-party + theft + damage: 600 to 800 €/year for MT-07 and 750 to 1 000 €/year for MT-09.
Can I easily unrestrict an A2 MT-07 or MT-09?
Yes for both, after the 2 mandatory A2 years. Unrestriction replaces a motor kit (intake throttles) + ECU mapping. Yamaha cost: 150 to 250 € parts, 1 to 2 hours labour.
Which MT for a tall rider (1.90 m)?
MT-09 more suited. Its 825 mm seat and stretched ergonomics fit tall riders better.
Which one lasts longer?
Technical tie: both Yamaha engines are among the market’s most reliable. Beyond that, the CP2 of MT-07 has slightly superior longevity thanks to its mechanical simplicity.
MT-07 or MT-09 for touring?
The MT-09 for highway comfort (torque, suspension). But the MT-07 stays more versatile for mixed road + unpaved trail touring.
